Fields Of Gold
I was in Birmingham today for the second reunion of a group of us who went trekking in Nepal two years ago. It was great to see everyone again.
Before that we went to see the Staffordshire Hoard.
Briefly this collection of fabulous gold, silver, garnet and other treasure was discovered in 2009 in a field near Lichfield Staffordshire by Terry Herbert an amateur metal detector user. The farmer's plough had churned up the soil enough to reveal some pieces and Mr Herbert found it, alerted archaeological experts and it was then painstakingly excavated from farmer Fred Johnson's field and has become one of the most important collections of Anglo Saxon treasure ever found. It dates back to about 650 AD.
The mystery is that no one knows why it was dumped there, who dumped it, who owned it etc. It's miles from any settlement so it raises many questions.
It is housed at Birmingham museum. Entry is free and you are allowed to take photographs.
