Site of the Buckle Pub
The plaque reads
"It was here at the Buckle that Sir Nicholas Pelham repelled a party of 1500 French invaders in 1545 two days after they had sunk the Mary Rose at Southsea.
In 1346 his ancestor accepted the sword and belt of the French king on his surrender at the battle of Poitiers. He adopted the buckle as the Pelham family coat of arms."
There is a now a private house on the site of the pub. This site shows the transition, though the house displays a somewhat eclectic range of architectural features, to say the least.
This is the original pub.
