Every year at this time I sit down with cards, freshly-filled fountain pen and address book to send off my greetings before it's too late. Once everything is written and sealed up, grandfather's letter scale gets taken down from the top shelf, dusted off and weights are checked to ensure that the cards fall under the 1oz. standard letter rate. It's a nice ritual. One day I'd like to replace the walnut burl on the base, french polish it, put nice, plush red velvet in the depressions for the weights and polish all the brass bits within an inch of their lives.
