Murals at Les Frigos

In Paris's 13th arrondissment near the Seine there stands a large, rather ugly building with a medieval-looking tower at the corner called Les Frigos. From 1920 to about 1970 it was a center for refrigerating much of Paris's food on its way to the Les Halles market--hence its name. When Les Halles was closed Les Frigos went out of business, but it was soon occupied as studio space by numerous artists, musicians and other creative types. An artist friend from Toronto, Leanne Davies, has been able to share a small studio in the building for the academic year she's spending here with her husband.

When I visited today to photograph her work for an upcoming exhibition in Leyden, I was able to blip some of the art (and graffiti) which is all over the building, especially in the tower stairs. A marvelous highlight is this hall on the ground floor, which has much more than I show here.
