Goodbye, Little Fish
Students at a local elementary school have been carefully rearing coho (AKA silver) salmon in an aquarium. Today the first grade students, supervised by fourth-graders, released the fish in a small creek near the school. The fish were carefully decanted into lengths of plastic gutter to slide gently into the creek.
It was quite a ceremonial occasion, with speeches by students and two city council members. Dana Lyons, a popular singer and composer, led the group singing of Habitat, by Bill Oliver, and Woody Guthrie's This Land is Your Land, with verses by the first-graders.
Once again, it was good to see young people learning to care about the environment.
