'The Old Bell of Urray'

In our Church at Urray near Muir of Ord this bell sits in the window and a plaque nearby tells us something about it. It says " This old Bell of Urray dates probably between 1590 and 1610. On the top of it there is a crown underneath which is a hammer between the initials IC. This means that the bell was founded by one of the hammermen of Edinburgh whose initials were I.C. Round the top of the bell is the following inscription :- SVND VIL AND DI VIL ORRA. This has been translated as : sound well and do well Urray. 'Orra' appears as a spelling of Urray as late as 1697".

The bell was later placed in the bellfry of the present Church in 1780 were it stayed until removed in 1920 because of cracks found in it. It was then lost for a number of years but later found and placed in this window in 1952.
