The Art of Knapping
Flints and West Sussex are so intrinsically linked with each other; going way back before the dawn of man. They are ever present in our walls, buildings and landscape; a constant reminder that man used to build with locally abundant materials, differing from county-to-county.
Flint 'knapping' is the method used to fashion the raw flint into usable shapes. These days, that tends to be 'Knapps' for building walls, but mankind's earliest tools and weapons, hand knives and spear heads, where created from this incredible material.
And when the world's fossil fuels run out, will this once again be our weapon of choice!
