Swimming Against The Tide

Guild Chapel

It's been an Easter Sunday full of variety.

Easter isn't something we particularly celebrate, although the double bank holiday and consequent 4 days without the 5.30 alarm is always welcome. It's also a bit of an excuse to eat chocolate, and the TV's been pretty good this year. I'm also continuing to feel better and emerge from my recent depressive episode, and start to rebuild my life, so it's a good one all round!

Today started with the Malaysian Grand Prix, and it was lining up to be another day in front of the television when the Wonderspouse announced that he thought we should go out since the weather was so lovely and that he'd like to go to Stratford.

So we did. There were sufficient shops open that we had lunch out at Subway, followed by a coffee at Costa. We then bought the DVD of 2012 (a film @richardwiles was tweeting about last night), some eggs (non-chocolate ones), some soap, and, oops, a few last chocolates from Thorntons!

Then we went for a bit of a constitutional to walk off some of the chocolate and ended up in this rather lovely chapel, where the sun was just coming in through the windows at a perfect angle. The very epitome of peace and calm.

I really wasn't intending to blip this when I took the picture and have had to do some research to find out what the chapel was. You can find out a bit more about it here.

The sad tinge to today is that the date is a very familiar one to me. It was the birthday of the girl who was my best friend at school. We used to play piano duets, have sleepovers and midnight feasts, go to brownies & guides, and do physics homework together, and she even took up the viola as an orchestral instrument (she was a classical guitarist) because that was what I played. I've thought about her a lot today, as I always do on her birthday. She died nearly 6 years ago, from breast cancer (well, the secondaries in her liver), leaving a 2 year old daughter, a 32 year old widower and distraught parents and brother.

I still miss her, and the 4th of April will always, first and foremost, be her birthday to me, no matter how many Easter eggs or lovely walks or picturesque chapels.

She'll not be forgotten.
