Chislehurst Caves
Chislehurst Caves - there are over 20 miles of chalk caverns and passageways which are divided into three main sections -Roman, Saxon and Druid. In WW1 the caves were used as an ammunition depot of Woolwich Arsenal. Then between wars the caves were used by Kent Mushroom Co to grow mushrooms. During WW2 it was turned into a massive air raid shelter in 1940/1 holding up to 15,000 people and complete with churches, shops and cinema. More recently bands have played and its been hired out as a venue for private parties (although I understand that stopped for both in the mid 1980's) and also used for numerous film locations including Doctor Who.
