The Corner of Your Heart

My deer...

When my sister was little, she saw one of our neighbor's throwing out this ceramic deer. She fell in love with the chipped lawn ornament instantly and cried for hours when my dad said that he wouldn't let her keep it. Finally, he gave in to her pleas, retrieved the deer from the curb, and placed it in our backyard. It has been there ever since.
The deer has become such a permanent fixture in our yard that I forgot that it was even there until I stumbled over it in search of a picture. It's broken now. I think that one piece of the antlers still sits deep within one of the neighbor kids' knees. But I think that if we ever got rid of it, I would miss its presence in my home.
