Gushets 6 & 7 - Nithsdale Street

At the roundabout on the north edge of Strathbungo, something fairly unusual in Glasgow happens. Three roads radiate tightly forming 2 gushets, and both are built up. All 3 roads have the same name: on the left, Nithsdale Drive, in the middle, Nithsdale Street, on the right, the orphaned eastern stub of Nithsdale Road, one of the city's plushest boulevards.

Of the two buildings here, Salisbury Quadrant on the left is the more immediately impressive. It was by Robert Turnbull, Alexander Thomson's archtectural partner, and uses many of Thomson's trademark details. Not in the cleverly minimalist way the master would have done, though - it's a bit of a wedding cake confection. Given the number of Alexander Thomson buildings round this spot, it's a shame the great man never got the chance to do this one too.

The smaller red building between Nithsdale Street and Road is an Indian restaurant now, and the little building is an extended stub from what many believe actually is a real Thomson building, albeit a very plain one. Beyond the Indian restaurant lies an nice little deli-cum-restaurant worth a plug called Cookie.

I used to live just to the right of this pic, and still cycle through here most days.

Oh, and here's another Scots word to sum up the day - dreich...
