I'm going up the A10 to join my friend Rebecca for her birthday.

On the way I stop off in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, a town populated with shoe shops and old fashioned sweet emporia.

I join Roger Carvell for a very excellent roast pork sandwich at cute little cafe before venturing further north. Roger has just has a book published.

We had a great night in Jamie's Italian, despite the fact that they'd sold out of lamb, pork and chicken by the time we were seated. When the cans of tomatoes were delivered to our table we thought we might have to make the starter ourselves. They were in fact to prop up the antipasti 'plank'.
