Surprise correspondence

He was putting on his jacket before heading out to work when Adam discovered the envelope in his pocket.

As his hand closed upon it, he remembered his gran hugging him tightly just before he left. She must have slipped the envelope into his pocket then, without him noticing.

He smiled to himself. "Full of surprises, aren't you gran," he said out loud. "Sly old devil."

He opened the envelope and found he wasn't surprised to see the winding key inside: the weight and bulk of it had been a give-away. There also seemed to be a note in there - probably instructions on watering her plants, and stuff like that, he thought.

Anyway, he would have to look at all that later. Right now he had two minutes to get to work - and he did not like thinking about what Mr McGregor would say if he was late again.

He threw the opened envelope onto the hall table and headed for the door.

Last night had been a funny old evening, he reflected; he couldn't help wondering where his gran was off to all of a sudden...
