Shell Midden

It was a lovely day so D and I went for a walk at Forvie Sands.

We came across a group of people on the Ythan Estuary who were taking part in an archeological excavation being conducted by Aberdeen University.

A shell midden, the thick dark layer of ancient mussel shells, is clearly visible. Below the red and white marker pole on the left of the picture, there is a layer of charcoal which is evidence of cooking by Mesolithic settlers. We were also shown some lithics or stone tools which had been found at the site.

(This is my 100th blip. Well done me.)
