What happened to the old school traditions, when traumatised new kids would go tearfully into school for the first time?

When Andy started school today, it wasn't even a surprise to see him in school uniform (he's been insisting on wearing his brother's for ages). He strolled on into the playground, met one of his pals from nursery, and when the time came, headed off without looking back.

When Matt started school, parents were allowed to go with the kids into the school building on the first day, but they've stopped doing that now. So when the kids had all gone in, the grown-ups just sort of shuffled away.
