Day 6 Ghana
Today Augustin took me to the Cape Coast about 2-3 hours out of Accra... though I have to admit an hour of that journey time is spent getting out of Accra!! The road traffic system in Accra makes you appreciate just how good we have it in the UK even if you think we don't!
It was enlightening all the way travelling through the villages, the fruit sellers along the roadside, differing scenery and not least to mention... the goats!
The housing is pretty much as you would expect it to be in Africa and that I am no stranger to as in Dec 2008 I made the 3 week journey by car from the UK through to The Gambia travelling through Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal and into The Ganmbia. So the housing I wasnt a shock for me but I know for some it would be. It is a world away from Iphones, flat screen tvs and Nintendo WIIs. Though they do have them here they are not as widely common as they are in the UK. But it has to be said that they do like their mobile phones and all modern gadgets. You get the impression from being around Accra that they strive to be like the UK and America with the fashions and 'fads' but maintaining the African culture is extremely important too.
Our first stop was Kakum National park to do the canopy walk which was a lot of fun but also very hot.
Then lunch was at Hans Cottage Botel (it is a hotel but the call it a Botel) where I managed to see a crocodile just as I was leaving... it was a bit hot for them to be at the surfice we were a little too early in the day for them to be at the surfice in abundance.
Then the final stop was at Elmina Castle... to learn all about slavery and the injustice and devastating conditions slaves were kept in. It was quite heartbreaking to tell you the truth.
We then made our way back to Accra via a fruit seller to pick up some fresh pineapples 5 of them for £2 and they are absolutely gorgeous, so sweet!
The photo is taken from the castle of the fishing boats and the children playing in the see... they were using wood as body boards!
