Oldest Pub in Glasgow?
This is one of several establishments who lay claim to this title.
Originally opened as a coffee shop back in 1797.
It was once called the Arcade Cafe - there is an entrance in the Argyle arcade. It was at the turn of the 20th century it was purchased by David Sloan and renamed Sloans. It even had an aquarium.
Traditionally, couples would choose their engagement rings in the adjacent Argyll Arcade before celebrating in Sloans. The arcade is full of jewellers shops.
Back in the old days twice a week a stagecoach would leave here bound for Edinburgh. The journey lasted five hours and, for a fare of 9 shillings, each passenger was allowed to take one canvas travelling bag. (If the journey lasted 5 hours I guess they must have been travelling the M8 at the rush hour!).
I hope to go through to Edinburgh tomorrow so I'm hoping for a slightly faster journey.
