Harakeke

... is the Maori name for New Zealand Flax, unique to New Zealand and one of our oldest species. It was named flax as its fibres are similar to the true flax found in the Northern Hemisphere.

The flowers (dried up in this photo) are popular food for many native birds and the stalks when dry are very popular with young (and old) children, for make believe sword fights .. ;-)

And the plants, well they are popular with photographers, as they are very distinct in shape and make an excellent subject as they don't move, pull faces, or talk back!

This sunset is also featured on at least one other blip tonight from Barking, I wonder what Kiwidino and Canterbury will get up to!

Tomorrow, a lunar eclipse to look forward to. Clear skies please.
