Effigy of T.E. Lawrence
The effigy lives in the quaint St Martin's Church in Wareham. It was made of Portland stone after Lawrence's death in the 1930s by the war artist and sculptor Eric Kennington.
The effigy was originally intended to lie in St Paul's Cathedral in London but was rejected because of political unrest surrounding Lawrence's death. It was next offered to Salisbury Cathedral, but the Dean at the time rejected it because he objected to Lawrence's sexuality. It was finally accepted by St Martin's Church, probably the perfect spot because Lawrence lived his final years a few miles away in Clouds Hill.
