Us Mem

Us Mem is the Friesian word for "Our Mother" or in Dutch "Onze Moeder". It's located in the city Leeuwarden (Netherlands). The bronze statue represents a Friesian cow and was donated by breeders to the Fries Rundvee stamboek (FRS). It was placed on the 6 of September 1954 and was located at the FRS headquarters. Later the cow was relocated 1990 to it's current location. The name Us Mem was not the official title of the statue. It is a nickname which it got in the same year the statue was placed in 1954.

Where does the name come from? Well there is also a statue Us Heit (our father) in Leeuwarden which was placed in 1906. That statue was for city keeper "Willem Lodewijk van Nassau-Dillenburg" and Us Heit was his nickname.
