The Jolly Roger
Bridge no. 32, at Catforth on the Lancaster Canal is known as The Jolly Roger.
'The Lanky' as it is affectionately known used to run from Preston to Kendal but it now terminates nr Carnforth. There is still part of the original canal north of Carnforth but it stops well short of Kendal. You can still follow the route in places and you do come across the odd canal bridge in the middle of a field.
I have run many hundreds of miles on the Lanky towpath, walked a few more, fished many many times, in fact i caught my first fish there in about 1964, my son caught his first fish there too and it was considerably bigger than mine - a pike about 6lb.
It has much less boat traffic than most of the other canals and generally is a pleasant place to be.
There are some decent pubs right by the canal and a few more within 10 mins walk. Grand!!
