aloft

Although cleverly concealed by the low angle and wide lens tilted upwards, the shelves on the left have level surfaces but somewhat parallelogrammic uprights which lean relaxedly 30° southwards. I can't remember if they had anything much in when we visited when it was inhabited (I was far too distracted the second time by having just had my fingers squished in the loft ladder mechanism when the ladder slipped off the landing) but they'll be getting a considerable amount of bracing before use. Once my eyes had adjusted (I didn't have anything screwdriverish enough on me to remove the bit of hardboard covering the skylight) I discovered that as well as free shelves we also have some free manky dining chairs, a small matchingish occasional table, a large library-style armchair sort of thing covered in cobwebs and a few random bits of wood, only some of which were very stupidly placed in relation to water pipes. Some people are coming tomorrow to apply substances to the roof's woodstuffs to prevent them going bad after some roof-leakage in the past after which the beauty of the empty loft will be shattered by some of the large number of boxes currently quite literally filling what was particulared as the dining room after the entire contents of the storage unit and the latest pile of stuff in the flat were both squeezed into the back of a single hired van this morning. I only had time for a brief lurk in the loft after the boxes were unloaded before it was time to build the guest bed so that the in-laws don't have to sleep on the floor tonight, pop back to the flat to get our polling cards and vote, grab a few more things like laptops, coffee-makers and phone chargers and head back down for newhouse's first night of habitation, though I still had to build our bed before that would be possible. It's very comfy even just to sit on to type this up. I had a brief try of watching some alternative election coverage but gave up after a few punchlines were occluded by room-noise. I haven't stayed up to watch results come in since 1997 but shall probably have to give it a miss tonight as tomorrow will be another day of putting things into vans and wrangling in-laws to stop them trying to unpack things and put them in the wrong places.
