The good book
Religion?
"Er, I ticked 'I believe in Dawkins' on my Facebook page," replied Adam.
"Eh?" screeched Margaret.
"I believe that Mr Cotter is trying to say he isn't a man of faith," translated Alice. "Good. Can't be doing with that sort of nonsense myself, either. No offence, Edith."
"None taken, I'm sure," sniffed Edith - though this sounded like well-worn banter between the two, rather than genuine bad feeling.
"Adam," continued Alice. "Have you ever heard of the Church of the New Word?"
He thought for a moment. "No," he replied, "don't think so. Should I?"
"No, I'd have been surprised if you had. Very few people know about it - but your grandmother was one of them. She may have been trying to protect you by not telling you about it."
"Or she may have told you when you hadn't been listening," added Edith, in what Adam thought was a rather pointed way.
Alice stood up, and went to a drawer, returning with a notebook.
"Isn't that my gran's?" asked Adam. "It's got her recipes in, I think."
Alice pushed it across the table towards him. "It has if you read it from the front," she said. "Try reading from the back."
Adam did.
