I'm a fairy!
No, wait, I'm a ferry. No, no, definitely fairy. Oh hell, I don't know, you choose.
We've had many discussions in the pub about the great Scottish vocab and I just can't get passed this one (though there are plenty of issues to argue about). I've grown up saying "ferry" and "fairy" the exact same way. Maybe I'm the only one, maybe every other Canadian, just like every Scot, knows that of course "ferry" sounds different from "fairy". I for one just don't see why that slight little inflection is so important. Surely if I were standing by the sea watching a boat approach and remarked "Oh, I just love riding on a fairy", the Scot standing next to me would understand what I meant. But no, I'd probably get "I don't see any fairies; just that ferry approaching". Who am I to argue; if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
This wee fairy by the way was gifted to me by napoleon's neice. I think it's very sweet.
