This one is commonly known as the jumping or teddy bear cholla (pronounced choy-a) and they're beginning to bloom.
Beautiful but prickly.

I stood on a "baby" when not paying sufficient attention a few weeks ago and it pierced my sneaker & then my foot, oweeee!
Still prefer being impaled (keep tweezers handy!) to being bitten by something like a mosquito though. Mercifully few of those in this arid climate.
