North Inch Witches
The North Inch, Perth was the main execution ground for convicted witches. After the Reformation local kirk sessions became responsible for "moral discipline". Daily life became subject to the obsessions of a grim fundamentalist local theocracy and witches and their supposed Satanic master soon figured large in some disturbed imaginations. "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" (Exodus 22:18) was taken literally.
These days The North Inch is home to more mundane pastimes. Our friends Margaret & Gordon were up from Mussleburgh and I took the opportunity to christen the golf clubs I bought for use in Perth eighteen months ago. Mrs L acted as caddy for Margaret and I hit the odd good shot that will ensure the clubs at least get a second outing sometime. A very pleasant way to "spoil a good walk", although a practical knowledge of witchcraft would have been useful to keep a few balls out of The Tay.
