flesh eating bug

I thought it was quite interesting looking until I looked up what it feeds on ... flesh! Eeeeuuww!
What is it doing sitting on my recently sprouted basil plant?
I am wondering whether it has feasted on the carcass of a bird that a great big hawk deposited on the top of the tallest saguaro behind our house yesterday evening.
