Who Will Care for My Garden When I'm Gone?
After shooting my last two blips I got to thinking about the peoney that was left in my Mother's front yard. So I traveled the full mile to her old house... just to see for myself how it was doing. Mom had the best garden, ever. Her tomatoes and canned pickles were a prize to be desired.
When I pulled up to the driveway... all I could do was gasp. The last time I was there was December 24th of this year. It was raining... It was my blip for that day.
Today, though, it was grown up with roses gone wild, honeysuckle and grape vines hanging everywhere.
Dare I enter? The no trespassing sign said "no"... But my sixty years of history with this place said "Come on in, your home"!
Immediately, I was overwelmed by the perfume of the roses, honeysuckle and, yes, the peonies that were in bloom! There was this feeling that I was now in a secret sactuary, over grown and protecting an asortment of singing birds and scampering squirrels from the outside world. I looked around for a picnic blanket spred by Mary, Collin and Dickon from the 'Secret garden'.
Alas, they did not materialize. As I peered into the old house, what was left of it, there was only a deep sadness. There were holes in the floor and walls. Glass had been broken. Reality set in and I left promising myself not to return.
After all, a garden is not only seeds in the ground but those wonderful things that grow in our hearts. So, Mom, Your family will tend to and care for that garden of hearts for you forever!
