the long shadow of tomatoes, which i can't grow

it is my failing they won't survive--
topsy turvy,
right side up,
planted deep in muddy bliss
where the worms tunnel
and become neighbors

they sit poised in gracious pots
for a few hopeful days
until they moan for water
and stalking cats
chew the last green stubble
of their final stand
