Bridal Bear
So, we're off to the Ultimate Lesbian Wedding this weekend and in my wisdom I decided to make matching bridal bears for the lovely brides. A little bit twee, I know, but this is a wedding with lavender shrugs and themed tables, one of which features a hand-made, spray-painted, cardboard castle so I don't think my bridal bears will be considered too kitsch. In fact, next to the Indiana Jones table (I'm really hoping that there'll be an Indy doll in bridal drag...) my bears will be positively low key.
I'm saying "bears" but in fact there will only be one bear making the 503 mile trip with us. There is bear trauma. The bears are knitted, and I bought the yarn back in February from a chain of craft stores (you know the one). Yesterday morning I ran out of yarn. No problem, thought I, I'll just pop back to the craft mega-store and pick up some more. Except it wasn't that simple. A trip down the hell that is the main trunk road on which this store is located resulted in the sad knowledge that they no longer stock this yarn. Mason, the very helpful craftgay working there called around all the other stores in the locale but to no avail. He even checked the back of the store for spare stock but was only able to produce two skeins of Emerald and two skeins of Onyx but none of the required Diamond. Ever the salesman, though, he did try to sell me the Emerald and Onyx at a knock-down price.
The upshot of this is that I have one finished bear, as pictured here, in all her be-ribboned glory, and one bear that has two legs, a body, and one arm. Maybe I should have blipped a photo of THAT bear instead! Anyway, a quick online hunt has revealed that I can buy some from Amazon, but it's going to take several days to get here. Not soon enough for the wedding, I fear. Bridal Bear number two will have to make the journey in a couple of weeks, with the help of the postal service. Poor bear.
