Old Churches Week - Day 1 - Kloosterkerk Thesinge
The Kloosterkerk in Thesinge is a small but impressive remainder of the Benedictine Monastery 'Germania' that was founded in the 12th Century. At the end of the 16th Century, the Monestary was raided several times by the Geuzen (Dutch) or Beggars (English). In 1786, the largest part of the church was demolished. The bricks were used to build the armory at the Kruitgracht in Groningen. Of the original cruciform (length 42 meters, width 23 meters), only the Eastern part now remains. The church is devoted to Saint Felicitas.
The building is no longer in use as a church; it is now a wedding location. Martine and I got married here in 2001 so it's a special location for us.
This is the first blip in a series; I plan to blip a different old church in the area where I live for seven days in a row. It's a sequel to Windmill Week.
