the long road home
Nine million bicycles in Beijing? Pah. Try 4.2 million cars. Supposedly there are around 200 new cars on Beijing's roads every day, and ever since the Olympics one-fifth of those cars are banned from driving for one day per week, on rotation, to try and ease the worsening traffic. Nonetheless our journey home- from the outskirts near the airport to our flat on the 4th ring road- takes us on the Airport Expressway, which is quickly becoming anything but an express journey.
I'll try not to comment on the driving- I'll try really hard- but as we approached the fourth ring road on the entry lane the traffic ground to a halt. Breakdown? we thought. Accident? No, no, just a chat on the mobile phone. Sigh. Still, at least he wasn't reversing down the motorway because he missed his turning, or doing a three-point-turn to come back down the exit lane the wrong way because he took the wrong turning. Imagine that.
