postcards from new york

attached, and then not

This is what remained after an vine ivylike plant either died or was cut away from a building wall on Tenth Street between Avenues A and B. It's a metaphor. I feel the same way. I have decided that if I get evicted that I am going to go through the shelter system and document my experiences by photographing them. This is a commitment to living on the street when I could just as easily leave the state. I'm as good as dead if I leave the city, so this decision has merit and a clearer focus somehow.

I didn't venture beyond the corner library. I was looking for a biography about Helen Levitt, who I recently learned was actually alive (94 and still working!) and living in Greenwich Village. Remember this Levitt photograph? There is a living or dead hero on every block in this town. I refuse to leave it.
