The ferret
Beautiful sunny day and we packed all the kids onto the bus and headed to the Otley Agricultural Show. It was the first time I've ever been to such a show and what a fine day was had. I learnt that a Friesian can win best in show by having a well appointed udder, I saw prize chickens, I watched rabbit judges judge a rabbit, I haven't a clue what makes a rabbit a prize rabbit, but very cute it was. I saw tractors, a man teaching sheep to dance and some sort of vulture. The kids had great fun worrying sheep, going down slides, eating ice cream and rock climbing. What got me excited was Otley Ferret rescue. The whimsical side of me thought that in Yorkshire when you dialled 999 you were presented with the choice of police, fire, ambulance or ferret. The thought was of rescue ferrets in hi viz vests coming to your aid, but in reality it was a refuge for abandoned ferrets. This was a particularly happy and well rescued ferret.
Other attractions included the Daredevil, which turned out to be a Yorkshireman breaking a £20 note and collecting the Yorkshire Grand Slam; seeing a ferret, a whippet and an old bloke in a flat cap all within an hour.
A marvellous day out and to be recommended.
