Wayside
This "Lion-on-a-stone" emerged with a little chisel help from this wayside layer of sedimentary rock, which is characteristic of this Water of Leith river valley.
The layers of rock are interspersed with layers of clay & because these were tilted, by ancient volcanic activity, they keep sliding & breaking. It is said that mile-for-mile this made the contruction of the old railway along this valley one of the most difficult in Britain. The many heavy stone retaining walls along the Walkway are evidence of this challenge.
