Winding

Heading away from the High Street along a circuitous route of lanes and alleyways, Margaret felt uneasy.

She was certain she wasn't being followed; that was something, at least. With the round-the-houses trip she was making, anyone doing the same would have to be tailing her. And of course, they would stand out a mile.

The young policeman was worrying, for certain. If he was part of all this, just how far did the conspiracy reach?

As well as that, that were the worries she already had: what exactly were Hewson and this cronies planning? How long did they have left to do something about it? And where exactly was Molly?

This last was the big question as far as Margaret was concerned. Without their leader, she and the others felt they were in the dark about so many things; while they were all strong and resourceful, Molly's guidance was something they all missed. And it was worrying that she hadn't contacted them yet.

Still, thought Margaret, it wasn't all bad. As she rounded a corner into a street many people wouldn't have known was there, she reflected that at least things seemed to have gone well with young Adam's boss.

Incredible that it had taken them all so long to realise he'd need to make some kind of excuse for his absence.

It had gone very smoothly. But then, she thought, everyone believes a little old lady.
