Harveys Cross

Out on my long run today, I came upon this forlorn memorial, which lies on a remote bridleway, past Pickers Hill Farm on the way up to Pickers Hill, not far from Saltdean.

It consists of a cross mounted on a two-stepped base surmounting a stone platform. The second step is inscribed with lead letters and a second stone plaque lies in front of the cross commemorating its restoration in 1999. The memorial is surrounded by a low metal railing and in front of the railing is an inscribed marker stone.

The inscription on the step reads:

JOHN HARVEY ESQ.
OF ICKWELL BURY IN THE COUNTY OF BEDFORD
DIED SUDDENLY ON THIS SPOT
ON THE 20TH DAY OF JUNE 1819.

To one side of the memorial (not shown) is a low stone bench seat inscribed with:
On the front of the bench seat, carved:

"Donated by Rottingdean Windmill Walks"

Sadly the cross has lost its horizontal members, but this is a peaceful spot in outstanding countryside.
