Fever Pitch

This one is especially for millys and paulb, since their countdown has FINALLY reached single digits!!! (For those of you that don't already know what I'm talking about, go check out their journals...)

Our (female!) hospital manager showed some brilliant initiative (and creativity) in preparation for the soccer world cup 2010 when she decided, a few months ago, to have these concrete balls painted as soccer balls! These balls have, until now, been far more functional than aesthetically pleasing: Their main aim was to prevent people from parking their cars on the sidewalk in front of the hospital's main entrance.

There are LOADS of them, stretching up past this tree in the background, all the way to the next intersection. It's a really striking scene when you drive past the hospital and we've even made the local newspaper with this work of art!

It's not the best shot, because I had to take it out the car window on my way to lunch. At least it's clear enough to give you a little taste of the soccer fever setting our beautiful South Africa ablaze at the moment:)
