Memorial Day
As small as Paw Paw is, it does have a Memorial Park with a Wall of Remembrance and sculptures containing the names of those that fought and died. Every Memorial Day a ceremony is held there, with the reading of the Gettysburg Address and the singing of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. It's a Big Thing, evident by the hordes of people attending.
We go too.
I hate war, but I have the utmost respect for the people that fight them.
The first order of business is always the raising and then lowering of the flags. The boy-scouts taking care of that feel the weight of what they are about to do. You can see it in their faces. So much concentration.
The PPHS-band (in the background) plays the National Anthem. People hold their hands on their hearts. Veterans from long past wars stand proudly, silently. Wreaths are laid, shots are fired.
I cried.
The rest of the day was on a lighter note: garden centre, groceries, rain, Fish Hatchery, goslings, planting corn and a backyard toad. Bucket loads of more rain.
Tomorrow it's back to work. I've never dreaded anything more :/
