Barrow's Goldeneye with Brood of Eight

We found this large family this morning on a small roadside pond in Waterton Lakes National Park (Alberta). The parent is a female Barrow's Goldeneye (Bucephala islandica)--the male was nowhere in sight (he's more dramatically plumaged, in black, white, and a dark green iridescent head).

All eight ducklings are visible here, though three only partly, behind their mom). They were very active, chasing each other and sometimes virtually skating across the surface like little jet-skis. Other birds were few and far between today--the weather turned cloudy again (and windy), after a sunny afternoon yesterday. The park is absolutely gorgeous, whatever the weather.

Edit (6 June): I originally identified these ducks as common goldeneyes, but the leader of our tour starting today corrected me. I'll comment further on 7 June.
