Favorite chair

While I was growing up there seemed to be alot of rules about chairs, sitting, how to sit, when to sit & where to sit.

Until I became alittle older it all seemed a bit of a mystery. I came to learn chairs had status or gave status.

For exsample my father would alway pull out my mums chair when she sat down. This was a gentlemanly sign of respect he would never sit down before her and would stand if she stood.

As children we were never allowed to sit in my fathers arm chair. He was the working man of the house & when he came home would sit in his chair. As a child it was thrown like & I would love to sit on my dads lap when he was in it.

At the dinner table we always had to sit up straight and had out allotted places. if on the bus when anyone older than myself got on we would be expected to give up our seat.

The picture today is of my grandfathers deck chair. I was given it after my father died. It has always lived in the shed & is in great condition as it is at least 20 years old.

We would go to see my grandparents & my grandfather was quite the gardener. We would pick the veg from his patch then sit side by side in the garden peeling & preparing it for dinner. Mostly badly on my part. Nothing left worth cooking after I had peeled the potatoes & carrots.

Now it lives in my garden in view of my veg patch. Still the most comfortable chair I own. I can still see grandad asleep in it with the news paper over his face after dinner.

Today chairs in my household have less meaning but my son as if some sort of unspoken rule never sits in my spot on the sofa. I wonder if my grandchildren will do the same.
