mosaic man

Here is a detail from a mosaic-covered lamp post on Astor Place, near St. Mark's Place. Many of the lamp posts in this area are covered in mosaics created by the activist artist Jim Power, a.k.a. the Mosaic Man. He has been working and doing mosaics in the East Village since 1985. Last year, Power was homeless for awhile, though someone put him up in the neighborhood in exchange for a commission. There are now more than 60 decorated lamp posts in this and surrounding neighborhoods. This detail is, in part, a tribute to Blip.
