Roman Gardens

After work took a small detour through the Roman Gardens. Most of the stones and columns now in the garden were recovered from the city walls but came originally from the legionary baths exercise hall, the fortress wall and other Roman buildings.

On the left hand side, just out of shot, is a reconstruction of the Roman hypocaust that came from the legionary baths.

In the 17th centuary the area where the gardens are now was the site of the city's flourishing clay tobacco pipe industry with kilns set up along the city walls.

Cock Pit Hill is also situated within the garden and was the site of the city's cock fighting pit for over 250 years.

I have noticed a head appearing at the end of the path as someone came up the steps as I took today's blip.
