Mono Lake and the Eastern Sierras

We just returned from a trip to Nevada on family business and managed to have some adventures along the road. This is the first look travellers get at Mono Lake as they move south along Highway 395. This region is the boundary between the Sierra Nevada range and the Basin and Range province that covers much of Nevada and Utah. The Sierras as a whole tilt towards the west, and the mountains here are steeper than the western peaks. Mono Lake is a kind of inland sea; it is filled by streams and snowmelt from the Sierras but there are no outlets. Water evaporates, leaving salt and other minerals behind - it is saltier than the ocean!
