Sparking clogs

Today we went on the train to Saltaire and had lunch in the boathouse overlooking the river and Robert's park(it was my day off.)

The whole village was built for the workers at Salt's Mill which was opened in 1853 for the production of mainly worsted cloth and is now a world heritage site. These steep steps lead down to the mill and must have been pounded daily by many thousands of clogs descending and the ascending them at the end of a long day.
I always think of them when I do the same. Sir Titus Salt who built the mill and village was an entrepreneur and when the mill was in decline and looked like it would be demolished like so many others it was rescued by another entrepreneur, Jonathon Silver, in the 1980's.

It is a great building to visit and now houses a fine diner and an Art gallery, principally displaying work by David Hockney who knew Silver at school, but the size and grandeur of the rooms themselves are the greatest attraction.

This is one of my favourite places. You will no doubt see more of this place over time!
