Roman Bulla

Went on a wild goose chase to Cheltenham to look at some sofas. We`re redecorating the lounge; long overdue. But the sofas were not suitable.

Cheltenham is a beautiful city. Classic buildings with iron balconies. But so busy didn`t get a chance to blip.

But the 130 mile round trip wasn`t wasted as we popped into Chedworth Roman villa on the way home. Just got in before it closed. Had a quick twenty minute butcher`s hook.

This is a bulla: an amulet that was given to boys at birth. They wore it until they reached adulthood at sixteen. This reproduction -- as you can see -- is just beautiful. Lovely craftmanship.
