My Humps....Check It Out!

To the average viewer, this is a completely mundane picture! Not to me...this picture signifies the end of a long process of getting speed bumps (the city calls them speed cushions or humps) installed on the road I live on. For the 9 years I've lived in my home, people have used our street as a shortcut to other streets and speed off of a main drag. I haven't felt safe letting my kids play out front because of the thoughtless speeders. It took practically an act of Congress and appealing to the 'Traffic Management Division' of our city to get this approved. It started out by figuring out the number to even start calling, deciding on what our neighborhood area was called, getting on a waiting list for approval of city funds, attending a city meeting about which of the 'traffic calming' methods we wanted installed AND canvasing our neighborhood with a petition! Yes, it was FINALLY approved during the fall. Ironically, the neighbors who wouldn't approve it were the ones without small children and shouldn't have been affected by it either way! They had to wait until the weather was decent and at a certain temperature for the mix to cure...our weather took a while this season! Now they are installed and I am so happy. I had originally planned on putting my lawn chair out front, sitting and watching the low-riding speeders racing over the bumps and lose a muffler, mess up their shocks or something worse. Somehow I've ended up having better things to do, but I have heard it through the grapevine that it's somewhat entertaining.
