Known unto God

These simple crosses are in the churchyard of Vlieland, bearing a number and the Dutch word "Onbekend". There are about 50 Commonwealth war graves in the small churchyard here, many RAF personnel, killed when their aircraft was shot down by the ak-ak guns on Vlieland. Others are (Merchant) Navy casualties. Many were not identifiable. It is those whose last resting place is marked by one of these crosses.

Why go to a churchyard on holiday? Well, I take an interest in war graves, and I don't come to Vlieland very often.
