Deerfield--Historic House
On a glorious summer day, we took our house guest from New York City about 15 miles north to Deerfield Mass., in the Connecticut River Valley to visit the semi-annual Old Deerfield Craft Fair and for a brief tour of Historic Deerfield--a wonderfully maintained group of over a dozen houses and museums along the wide and leafy main street of the village.
Among many potential blip I've chosen the historic Williams House --one of the ten or so that one can visit, to view period furnishings and decor. The house was built in 1730 and extensively renovated in 1830; it is characteristic of the architectural style of the town.
Deerfield was founded in 1673 and for many decades was the northwesternmost outpost of New England's colonists. The major event in its early history was a raid by Indians and French soldiers in February 1704, in which 59 persons were killed outright and over 100 were taken north to Canada (more dying along the way).
