Shutters [Croatia, Day 5]
We didn't go on the boat trip after all. Carl had been unwell during the night (stomach upset) and was wary of being able to cope with the motion of the boat. We'll catch up with the Calypso another day instead.
Instead of a day on the ocean wave, we treated ourselves to a few extra hours of quality nap time, and only ventured out around mid afternoon. It was generally cloudy, with just the occasional burst of sunshine brightening things up from time to time. We explored Makarska from a different angle for a few hours, concentrating on the non-tourist, higher road. We had a nice meal in a restaurant popular with the locals, found our way to the bus station (for future reference if we decide to investigate some of the mountain villages), and made preliminary enquiries about hiring a car for a few days next week.
I made a few attempts at capturing some of the local colour during our wander, but wasn't especially pleased with any of the results. One of the main things which struck me from the very beginning has been the roofs. The majority of the buildings use the same semi-circular high-profile tiles that have apparently been the norm for many, many years. They're full of character, and I hope to manage a later blip which does justice to how well they look.
I wouldn't call it a plan, but we're thinking of mountain exploration tomorrow, most probably by tackling the local bus service. Should be fun.
